Tokyo’s 2020 Olympic Games Tech innovations

Here we are, Tokyo’s 2020 Olympic Games have finally started this Friday, on 23rd July. The games formerly scheduled to be held during summer 2020 were delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These Olympics are gathering around 11,000 athletes from 206 countries, and it is also the opportunity for Japan to perform a real show of technological innovations.

Robotic guides, autonomous cars, crowd control directed by artificial intelligence, facial recognition and immersive virtual reality are among the technologies presented at the Olympics. Let’s take a look at some of these technologies.

What are the technological challenges for the city of Tokyo?

For these Olympic games and especially because of the pandemic, security will be a key concern, and high-tech may help with crowd control and infection risk management.

These technological innovations are not just created for the Olympics. The city is actually studying how can IoTs be used to improve everyday life in Tokyo. However, such a big event is the perfect opportunity to implement and test them.

Tokyo has already implemented many smart city ideas using IoT technology. For instance, in the public transports an IoT-based smart maintenance system was introduced to minimize disruption. Sensors can collect data to identify weak points, predict equipment failures, and inform when and where maintenance is needed.

Tokyo also wants to use IoTs to help reduce carbon emissions and become a more environmentally friendly city. For instance, parts of the Olympic village are meant to be turn into fully hydrogen-powered smart districts after the Games.

How IoT solutions will be apply to the Olympic Games?

Robots

In Japan, Robots are an emblem of the technological innovation. This is why we could not imagine Tokyo 2020s Olympic Games without those humanoids. If you watched the Opening Ceremony, you probably have already seen some of them. Robots are puts in the airport to welcome visitors and ensure multilingual guidance. Olympic athletes can meet no less than six different models of robots. All robots are there to provide an assistance to the spectators and the personnel of the Olympics. Since no foreign spectators are allowed to come to the Olympics, Robots are also equipped with cameras which allow to live a virtual experience, as if you were in the heart of the Olympic sites in order to give access to the greatest number.

Immersive Live Viewing

As stated before, since no foreign spectator can assist to these Olympic Games, immersive virtual-reality experiences are available. It will allow them to enjoy the event in a more engaging manner. Viewers can enjoy the events in such a way that it really feels like they are sitting in the stadium.

Autonomous Cars

Autonomous vehicles will be used during the Olympics. These cars are made to drive passengers on some specific trips like from the airport to the Olympic village and around different Olympic places in Tokyo. It will ensure the transportation of athletes and staff. Around 100 self-driving cars will be on the road during the Olympics. This new technology is not only useful during the Olympics but if it works properly, it can become one of the next generations of public transport in Tokyo. In partnership with Toyota, the International Olympic Committee has developed vehicles powered by artificial intelligence.

Facial Recognition Systems

The Facial Recognition technology is going to be used at Tokyo Olympics 2021. Autonomous cars will be equipped with a facial recognition system to identify athletesstaff members and journalists and prevent from identity usurpationfalsification and use of lost or stolen accreditations.

Facial recognition will also provide a way to prevent from coronavirus spread by using touchless security screening process. It will also track people’s moves to identified infected ones and find out those who were in close contact.

Language Translators

Olympics games gather people from all over the world speaking many different languages. To help passing through the language barrier Japan has developed instant translation systems. English to Japanese translation AI chatbots will be available on the robots.

As you can see, these Tokyo 2020’s Olympic Games are not just a sport event, it is also an opportunity for Japan to show its technological innovations. We will have the opportunity to support our team for two weeks until August 8th.

Next Olympic Games will be held in China during winter 2022. These games will also be challenging for China regarding the pandemic.

But, for the moment, let’s enjoy the games. Which sport do you prefer to watch ?

Hainan Island’s ambition to become a leading tourist destination

Hainan (海南), literraly translated “south of the sea”, is a tropical island in southern China. It is mainly known for its tropical climate and its seaside resorts and often called the “Hawaii of China”. The main town of the island is Sanya, located in the south of the island.

Increased number of tourists

The year of 2020 was marked by the control of the Covid-19 epidemic by the Chinese government on the territory, and the almost-impossibility of traveling abroad. The island of Hainan, and in particular the city of Sanya, recorded records in the tourism sector during the second part of 2020.

Qunar, an online travel agency said that the number of tourists increased by 30% in the last two months of 2020. He also said that this number will increased by 50% for the Chinese Spring Festival.

Hainan is a popular travel destination in China for its tropical temperatures, nautical activities and shopping. Indeed, the island has a special duty-free shopping policy to invite travelers to come on the island and buy.

The flagship attraction of the moment is the Atlantis Hotel. It is a 5-star resort with waterpark, dolphin show, aquarium… In the Poseidon Underwater Suite, you can even admire sea animals from your bed or bathtub.

A prosperous duty-free business

Since 2018, the Chinese government has the ambition to make Hainan a free trade zone for the economic opening plan. Hainan is now offering travelers the option of entering the territory without visa for 30 days. The other particularity is that its a duty-free and travel retail place that attracts tourists.

Since July 1st, duty-free purchases can reach the amount of 100,000 yuan per person (instead of 30 000).

New projects are underway like the construction of the Haikou International Duty Free Mall in 2022, which will become the largest duty free shopping mall in the world.

Tinder & lockdown : the possible (limits) of digital

This past year, social applications and networks have enabled everyone to get closer and stay in touch. Our social ties have been put to the test and digital has been a perfect tool to compensate for our lack of interaction. However, meeting new people is even more difficult than maintaining relationships. In this article we will discuss the strengths and limitations that have allowed Tinder in its quest to meet love in its 16m2. What exactly does the Tinder dating scene look like at the time of the coronavirus?

Tinder on a phone

Tinder, the comeback

Tinder is a meeting application present since 2012 in the digital ecosystem. The application has more than 340 million downloads worldwide.

Today, 6 million users are registered and active

The number was down before the lockdown but is now growing again.

According to its latest quarterly report, its registration growth is 28% – and its revenues have increased by 31% compared to last year.

And the application doesn’t intend to stop there by continuing to innovate for the benefit of its users.

“Face to face”: the new containment functionality

A new feature has been developed in recent months. It may seem simple but it turns out to be a real problem for the application. Video calls will be implemented

Why not before? Because with the coronavirus the habits have changed, video calls have become a formality whether it is in the classroom, with friends, family, professionally… We have realized the importance of a face to capture more intimate information. And most importantly, when it is impossible to meet physically, video calls become much more interesting.

To avoid overflows like on chatroulette, Match Group (owner Tinder) spoke about the addition of this feature which has been thought over at length, and the group ensures that security has been put first.

Rory Kozoll, Head of Trust and Safety Product Division at Tinder, said: “We are delighted to share with you the fact that our Face to Face functionality is being rolled out to our global community after receiving positive feedback from our members who accessed it early on. This is in addition to our growing list of features designed to keep members safe throughout their dating journey, such as photo verification, security center and our offensive message detection technology”.

How Tinder Ensures Security and Consent

Tinder and Match Group ensure that security and consent are in place.

For this, the new “Face to Face” application will only be activated if both persons wish to do so. If only one of them clicks on the camera button, the other will not be alerted.

A document has been written in which all the deployed functions are revealed. It shows that Face to Face can easily be disabled, that those involved have to accept a set of basic rules, but also that it is possible to send a report to Tinder when a situation has made a user uncomfortable. Tinder has already started testing this feature in a few countries, but this time the deployment is official, and international.

Online date limits

However, a paradox is to be raised

The goal of the application: that users spend as much time as possible on the application. The platform encourages them to stay there as long as possible because the presence of users is monetized. How then to understand the recommendation “Stay on the app” which has been displayed since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis.

The goal of the users: to meet one or more partners. Although for a part of the users, the use of Tinder is only limited to online flirting, most of them want to meet in person, especially during a successful match!

It’s interesting to wonder how the application will maintain its activity. There are a few things to consider, such as the free exchange with people from all over the world. A digital marketing challenge is offered to Tinder to link its development to the satisfaction of the user experience

Cryptocurrency: between speculative madness and promising technology

In October 2017 I decided to buy some cryptocurrencies after it showed signs of rapid growth. 3 months later the bitcoin was on its way to reaching20k dollars, my 100€ investment then had doubled, and I decided to sell everything. Shortly after the bitcoin had its first course crash dragging the other currencies with him and hitting a low 3200$ in December 2018. Today, the bitcoin is worth 40000$, a 13-time increase in 2 years! Is cryptocurrency a speculative madness or a promising technology?

What happened during those 2 years that could make cryptocurrencies back on track? If the cryptocurrencies seem to have regained some popularity the opinions around cryptocurrency are still divided. For some they are just a financial bubble, for others, they are money laundering assets due to their anonymous characteristic and more and more people see it as a safe haven like gold.

In this article, I’m going to try understanding how cryptocurrencies made such a comeback in 2020 and what factors are determining their present success whether they are economic, political, or technological.

The blockchain technology

To understand how cryptocurrency works, you need to understand the technology behind it: the blockchain. The blockchain is a complex technology but a simple way to explain it is through the image of a shared database among the users that collects data in a storage space called a block. When a block is full of data it is then connected with the previous block creating a chain of blocks. The data in the block can be viewed but cannot be modified anymore. A new empty block is created that will receive new data and the process repeats again and again.

The data that is written inside the block whether it is a transaction, a contract, or any document is secured via the proof of work system used to validate the authenticity of the data. The proof of work system uses advanced cryptography methods called “hash” which are mathematical algorithms that are very difficult to resolve to secure the data that are written in the blocks. The most used hash algorithm is called SHA-256 and is the algorithm that secures the Bitcoin blockchain among many others.

In order to validate the data via the proof of work system, users connected to the blockchain have to generate the hashes using processing power such as graphics cards for the Etherum. These people are called “Miners” and are rewarded with some cryptocurrency for their processing power contribution to secure the Blockchain. The cryptocurrency along with the timestamping of the data serves as proof that someone used some processing power to secure a transaction. This method is very secure but consumes a lot of energy. In 2020 the electricity consumption of Bitcoin peaked at 77.78 TWh which wich is around what Chile consumes in a year. Now that we know how a blockchain works let’s see some of its application possibilities.

Main Cryptocurrencies

The Bitcoin

The most used application of the blockchain is a secured transaction system and the most famous is Bitcoin. Bitcoin with its 480 billion market capitalization is essentially an alternative to the banking system and trades pros and cons with the banking system. The first difference is that the system operates without a central authority or a single administrator. It is managed in a decentralized way thanks to the consensus of all the nodes of the network. The transactions are anonymous the drawback is that it is used in illegal activities. The transactions are also faster, have no amount limit and the fees are way smaller than a credit card.

Etherum

Etherum is the second cryptocurrency in terms of market capitalization after Bitcoin with 90 billion and a completely different take at the blockchain. As the Bitcoin blockchain, it is a decentralized open-source blockchain with smart contracts as the key feature. Smart contracts are programs that automatically execute as soon as a sum specified in the contract has been transferred in Ether. This means that the verification of an incoming payment is no longer necessary because the transfer directly starts the consideration specified in the program.

Another promising feature is Dapps for decentralized apps. Dapps are applications that use smart contracts and run on the Etherum Virtual Machine. The main characteristic of Dapps is that they are running on a decentralized network and not on a central server. The application of Dapps are very broad and include e-commerce, gaming, marketing, banking, process automation, and many more.

There are many other cryptocurrencies like Ripple or Litecoin that have their own uses, but these have a lower market cap.

Why is Bitcoin successful?

But why this sudden increase in the price of cryptocurrencies? One answer comes from political and economic factors. With the Corona crisis severely impacting the economy, both the US and the EU launched a massive economic recovery plan to save it by printing large quantities of money. The result is the increase of the US monetary mass M2 by 30% in 2 years going from 14 trillion to 17 trillion. People aware of this want to invest in assets that will retain their value rather than losing it over time and will invest in safe-haven assets. Recently PayPal allowed transactions in Bitcoin, Etherum, Bitcoin cash and

Cryptocurrencies and especially the bitcoin are now seen as safe-haven assets and a good way for investors to diversify their portfolio. The recent creation of a USD coin backed by the dollar sent the message that institutions are now accepting Bitcoin and that cryptocurrencies are here to stay.

Senior citizens had to improve their digital literacy

According to the WHO, between 2000 and 2050, the proportion of the world’s population over 60 years of age will double from about 11% to 22%. The silver economy is a growing market and the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated its growth. Last March, the lockdown shaked up all of our habits, and our elders had to adapt with more difficulty than us. Not knowing how long this situation would last, senior citizens had to improve their digital literacy to avoid loneliness.

Senior citizens can use technology for many reasons: to consult the latest news, to keep in touch with friends and family, to shop online, or to book trips or cabs. However, there are barriers to the use of these social networks due to their age and their reduced cognitive abilities. Touch screens, keyboards size, frequent changes of interfaces are problems for senior citizens.

Old man with a smartphoneImproving your digital literacy: the only way to stay in touch with your loved ones

Fighting against loneliness was the first motivation to learn these new technologies. Many senior citizens living alone have been confronted with the most brutal isolation. To keep a link with their family or loved ones, phone calls were not enough. They remain the most used communication tool but eye contact is lacking. Many of them then discovered the potential of live video. They can share moments of conviviality with their children or to blow out grandchildren’s birthday candles.

The most autonomous of senior citizens still living alone and owning a smartphone or tablet were mostly using WhatsApp as instant messaging. They discovered the application’s video feature, which was widely used and very successful.

After the lockdown, more than half of them are still using this technology they never thought they would use. “A slim majority (56%) of those over 50 years of age say that new technologies allow for a better quality of relationship compared to phone calls. More women (69%) agree with this statement. “(Séniosphère conseil, June 2020). Video chat applications are a booming market. Especially for senior citizens. For them, it is a more than effective way to never feel alone.

Line at supermarket during covid 19

Senior citizens are now shopping safe…

The proportion of the population that has most respected the lockdown are the seniors citizens. These are at-risk people who had to avoid contact as much as possible.

For the most geographically isolated, it was necessary to adapt to go shopping for basic necessities. For many of them, the delivery of meals or the drive were essential. The drive concept has been known for several years, but the health crisis has multiplied its followers among seniors.

Also, retirees were the only ones not teleworking. They had a lot of free time for hobbies such as crafts or gardening. As all unnecessary stores were closed, they had to order on the internet and found a lot of advantages like ess time wearing a mask and no more long line-ups.

This situation has therefore greatly contributed to the development of online purchasing for seniors, for security and logistical reasons during this period. Today democratized among all populations, e-commerce continues to adapt to all its targets.

… and consults safe

One of the technologies that has most appealed to seniors after visio calls is online medical consultations.

On the French market, Doctolib is an app known to take medical appointments online. Within a year, it became the first online medical consultation platform.
Three out of four doctors have set up online consultation since the beginning of the Covis-19 epidemic.

Also, mental health problems have increased significantly since the first confinement. The elderly being the most isolated, they have been able to consult applications to talk to a therapist, to distract themselves or to meditate. For some, technological tools have become therapists.

No more stereotypes. Senior citizens have been forced to improve their digital literacy so as not to be put on the side of the rest of the population.Today, digital is becoming part of their daily life. Brands have understood this and are integrating it more and more in their advertising. Seniors have become a target like any other. Social interactions are more and more complicated, we need easy to use interfaces to reach everyone. No one should be isolated.

Everyone should be able to easily improve their digital literacy.
